神明神社

千叶氏的海上守护神

祭拜天照大神的神明神社,在古老的记载中作为“结城神明”被列为千叶氏的守护神之一 (《千学集摘录》) 。
 曾经在都川千河口附近,当年的入江(结城浦)港口,就是当今的千叶港,是非常重要的设施。千叶氏也是经由水运与镰仓等有着经济联系的海洋领主。附近的神明神社作为千叶氏的海上守护神,祈求航行平安。
 神明神社的总社,视为与开运有关的伊势神宫。千叶氏自古以来就与伊势神宫有联系。据说神明神社是在千叶氏搬到千叶时建造的。并且在同一时期,把部分领土捐赠给伊势神宫。
 在都川河口的砂州和妙见洲,曾经存在的寒川神社牌坊,据说原本是神明神社的东西,看作是船舶进入千叶港的地标。神明神社也被供奉在亥鼻台地,人们认为这是因为从海上望去,此台地成了千叶港的地标。

신메이 신사

지바씨가 모시는 바다의 수호신 

아마테라스 오오미카미(天照大神)를 제신으로 모시는 신메이 신사는, 옛 기록에 의하면 유우키신메이(結城神明) 신사라는 이름으로 지바씨의 수호신사(守護神社)로 기록되어 있습니다.(『천학집(千学集) 발췌』)

과거에 미야코 강 하구 근처에는 유우키우라(結城浦)라는 만을 이용한 항구, 지바미나토(千葉湊)가 있었습니다. 지바씨는 수운을 통해 가마쿠라(鎌倉) 등과 경제적인 관계를 맺고 있던 바다의 영주이기도 했기 때문에 지바미나토는 매우 중요한 시설이었습니다.

이 곳 가까이에 있던 신메이 신사는 지바씨의 해상 수호신을 모신 곳으로 항해의 안전을 기원하였습니다.

신메이 신사의 총본사(総本社)는 개운(開運)과 연관이 있다고 알려진 이세 신궁(伊勢神宮)이며, 지바씨는 오래전부터 이세 신궁과 깊은 인연을 맺어 왔습니다. 신메이 신사가 세워진 것은 지바 가문이 본거지를 지바로 옮겨온 시기라고도 하며, 이와 같은 때에 영지의 일부를 이세 신궁에 기부했다고 합니다.

미야코 강 하구의 모래톱인 묘켄스(妙見洲)에 과거에 있었다던 사무가와 신사(寒川神社)의 도리이(鳥居)는 원래 신메이 신사의 소유였다고 전해지고 있으며, 이는 지바미나토로 들어오는 배들의 표식이었던 것으로 추정됩니다. 또 이노하나(亥鼻)대지에도 신메이샤(神明社)가 모셔져 있는데, 이 곳 역시 바다에서 볼 때 이 대지가 지바미나토의 표식이 되었기 때문으로 생각됩니다.

Shinmei Shrine

Guardian Deity of the Sea for the Chiba Clan

Shinmei Shrine, a shrine dedicated to the goddess Amaterasu Ōmikami, was recorded as being one of the guardian deities of the Chiba Clan, known as “Yūki Shinmei” (according to an excerpt from the “Sengakushū”, a collection of historical records which was kept in Chiba Shrine).
In the past, there was a port called Chiba Minato located at the estuary of the Miyako River which utilized an inlet known as “Yūkiura”. Chiba Minato served a very important function as a port because the Chiba Clan were lords of the sea at that time and used water transportation for their economic activities with cities such as Kamakura. The nearby Shinmei Shrine was the guardian deity of the sea for the Chiba Clan and it was dedicated to praying for safe voyages at sea.
The Grand Head Shrine of Shinmei Shrine is Ise Jingū Shrine, which is associated with good luck and the Chiba Clan had long-established connections with Ise Jingū. It is said that Shinmei Shrine was built when the Chiba Clan moved their headquarters to Chiba, which was at the same time as which the Chiba Clan also donated part of their territory to Ise Jingū.
The torii gate at Samugawa Shrine was once located at Myōkensu, a sandbar situated at the estuary of the Miyako River. It is said to have originally belonged to Shinmei Shrine and it is thought to have marked the entrance for ships arriving at Chiba Minato. Furthermore, Shinmei Shrine was located on the Inohana Plateau and it is thought that this was used as a landmark for Chiba Minato from the sea.
